Rev. Kevin L. Nelson, a native Kansas Citian, became the 9th Senior Pastor of Second Baptist Church on May 3rd, 2016. He brings over 25 years of faith-based experience to the position. From a life of great service, he has many skills that will help our community and our church. While at SBC, he served as a Minister in Training (2011-2015) and as Interim Pastor (March 2015-May 2016).  Rev. Nelson, known as a dynamic speaker and teacher is a man “after God’s own heart”. For 152 years, SBC has graced the community with life-changing missions and ministry. Rev. Nelson is equipped to honor Second Baptist’s legacy and advance its future with God’s help.”

Rev. Nelson was ordained in 2007 under Pastor Delano Benson, Pleasant Green Baptist Church (KCMO) and licensed in 1993 under the late Pastor Earl Abel at Palestine Missionary Baptist Church (KCMO). He also served for four years as Youth Pastor while at Pleasant Green. Rev. Nelson served honorably as Religious Program Specialist/Chaplain Assistant during his ten years in the U. S. Navy.  As a bi-vocational pastor, he taught full-time as an educator in Kansas City Public Schools.

Rev. Nelson earned a Bachelor of Arts in Public Administration with an emphasis in Non-Profit Management from Park University (MO).  Filled with a desire to study theology, he began his pursuit of a Master of Divinity degree at Central Baptist Theological Seminary in 2014.  Soon after, he completed a Clinical Pastoral Education Internship at Research Medical Center.

Rev. Nelson served on the American Baptist Church-supported Bethel Neighborhood Center Board (KCKS).  He continues volunteer civic efforts as a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. – Beta Lambda Chapter.

Rev. Nelson is the son of Mr. Aaron and Mrs. Patricia Robinson and husband of our own Rev. Dana Patterson Nelson. Together they have three children: Joshua, Jacob and Gabrielle.
